My work is informed by the interplay of contrasts—cultural, emotional, and visual. As an artist of Peruvian and German descent, I grew up between two distinct value systems: the expressive, extroverted nature of my Peruvian family and the more introverted, structured approach of my German heritage. This duality has shaped my artistic perspective and continues to guide my approach to materials, form, and perception.

 

A defining moment in my practice occurred during a period of severe migraines. While searching for grounding and clarity, I began cutting out folds from fashion magazines. What started as a coping mechanism became an artistic discovery: folds revealed unexpected compositions, a balance between tension and softness, and a new visual language. This marked the beginning of my long-term investigation into folds.

 

During my studies at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, I further developed my interest in combining traditional and contemporary techniques.

 

This exploration culminates in my Folds tapestries, in which I employ the classical trompe-l’œil technique to play with perception, illusion, and visual ambiguity.

*Trompe l'oeil: French for “deceive the eye”, is an art technique that uses realistic imagery to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects exist in three dimensions.
